The Caxton - North Gardens - Brighton

The Caxton

Nestled in the salubrious environs of North Gardens, tucked away behind Queens Road is The Caxton. The exterior of the caxton is well presented and decorated with green things of some sort (after some research I discover these are flowers/plants) But enough of the; ‘Alan Titchmarsh’ routine, we’re here to drink beer review a pub.

This pub is currently being refurbished - Completion date Mid May 2007

Inside you discover a smallish, OK then, cosy looking bar. But looks can be deceptive, as we’ll discover later. The bar reveals a multitude of fine beers, including Hurlimans, prices are reasonable at around £3/pint. The service is fast and friendly. There isn’t a huge amount of seating inside, just some bench seats and a couple of tables. Now if you go on a little bit of an exploration of the Caxton, you’ll find an amazing mezzanine type garden, with more seating; perfect on a sunny day! A further bit of exploration reveals the other bar, which is a sports-type affair complete with pool table.

Inside The Caxton

Once sat comfortably you can sup away in pleasant surroundings, the demographic seems to be 25+ non-trendy non-poser types. After a few beers you may feel the need to get some food and you wont be disappointed by the food on offer. I must confess a soft spot for the veggie nachos, a large helping being sufficient for two people!

Toilets were clean functional and well-stocked with soap. The décor is movie themed in the left-hand bar and casino/game themed in the other bar. The sports bar can get a little busy; as they have a TV showing football, rugby etc. But you can always move elsewhere in the pub, if sports is not your bag.

There was no indication of free wireless internet access here so I didn’t fire-up the laptop. They also have a ‘downstairs’ which can be hired out for groups of up to 50. I would recommend the caxton as a nice saturday afternoon kind of place, where you can grab a pint and some quality food.

Update 15/08/06
Went in for a couple of pints over the weekend and a pint of Asahi is a whopping £3.30/Pint!!!! The nachos are still as good though :)
