The Cobblers Thumb - New England Road - Brighton
![]()
Located on the corner of New England Road/Street, which isn’t the nicest place in Brighton, this pub looks pretty rough from the outside (a little like the Hobgoblin) but then at least it fits in with the surroundings. Thankfully this establishment is nothing like that urine soaked hell-hole. OK, that’s not really saying much I know, but lets go inside and sample some of the drinks on offer.
This is a traditional pub, not a trendy “themed” bar, despite the Aussie theme throughout. Service was friendly and prompt. Prices being in line with most of the other pubs around these parts. I ordered a pint of Old Rosie which was served a little too warm for my liking, but was still acceptable.Seating was ample with high barstools and tables to the left and normal tables and chairs to the right. We elected to sit at the bar and natter with some of the regulars.Out back is a pool table and there are some bar games, music was of an alternative rock nature, so gets a thumbs-up from me (that might not be your thing though). The toilets have been veered towards the ’shit-hole’ side of the road in the past; on my most recent visit they seem to have been cleaned, re-stocked and in a much better state generally. Whether this is down to the new management or I happened to visit on the ‘right’ day is yet to be seen.If you like down-to-earth non-pretentious* pubs then the cobblers’ has a lot to recommend it.
*you know the type of place, take a walk in to Hove along Western road and you’ll find loads of swanky places with even more swanky, twenty-something patrons, drinking their swanky over priced fizzy beer
