The Prince Albert - Trafalgar Street - Brighton

The PA

If this pub is good enough for Shane MacGowan and Nick Cave to have a few pints whilst going Dutch on prawn cocktail* crisps, then it’s good enough for the rest of you ingrates!
Located within a 3minute walk from Brighton station, the Prince Albert has many things going for it. Inside you’ll find the floors to be bare wood and there are several rooms, where you can hide away from the rest of the pub, if you feel less social. The walls of the PA are decorated with pictures of many of the bands which play Brighton, many of which are signed by the relevant band members. The music in the Albert is quite diverse but it’s generally has a lot to recommend it, even if they current song isn’t on your list of favourites, the next one may be.

The drinks are priced at 2.95 for a pint of Staropramen (which is a damn fine beer) and were served at a perfectly acceptable temperature. You’ll also find hoegaarden, guinness and all the usual suspects. The lavs’ are adequate, rather than salubrious – the ladies being upstairs and the gents being outside at the back of the pub. The ladies powder room features one of my favourite scrawlings:

“Everyone in Brighton drops the ‘H’ from ‘Hippy’ and replaces it with ‘fuckin’ ”

You can also hire out the room upstairs for private functions – When I last checked this was free, providing you spend enough behind the bar. A friend has a party there earlier this year and the beer happened to be on sale, so a good time was had by all. The one negative point was that the pub closed at eleven. I’m told they now stay open to twelve now.* I’m not sure they were eating prawn cocktail crisps – but the PA does sell them; which makes the place worth a visit in itself!

[...] 10 meters from Western road - but a world away! The Prince Arthur, not to be confused with the Prince Albert (The person, piercing or pub) is a great little boozer! Why? I’m not sure that I can sum it up in words, its just a nice little pub to have a few beers in. [...]
