Pull & Pump - Clarence Gdns - Brighton

Avast Ye!
The Pull & Pump, situated a few yards off of Western Road, has something of a ‘Pirate’ feel – No its not a theme bar, but it does feel like you are below decks on an old fashioned sailing ship.
This sea-going theme is not intentional, the décor is all wood, floors, ceilings, everything! Just add to sea-going ambiance. The service was polite and swift and there is always a friendly ‘vibe’ — Seating is a little on the limited side as there are only four main tables with a handful of smaller ancillary ones. There are four more tables outside, weather permitting.
The People
There seems to be a good mix of patrons, young, old, regulars and day trippers – It can get very busy at peak drinking times and Saturday afternoons when people tire of shopping. Music is played and is quite varied but not intrusive. A big screen TV is not present, so you’ll be out of luck if you want to watch sporting events.
Beer
There is a good choice of beers, wines and spirits available, including that Brighton classic; Tuaca! Our benchmark, Kronenbourg is less than £3/pint which is getting rarer in and around Brighton. One criticism I have is about the cleanliness of the glasses; a friend received a glass with lipstick marks on it – It may have been a one-off, but clean glasses are a must, especially with some of the dirty hippies than hand around in Brighton
Food
There is a range of food on offer, not a massive range, but what they do have is tasty and you get plenty of it. Fish finger butties, the zenith of culinary expertise, used to be on the menu, but alas. they weren’t on offer on my last visit.
Toilets
Were clean and stocked with soap, hot water and working hand dryers – Other pubs please take note, its not rocket science and some of us like to wash our hands after using the facilities! There was a lack of wireless Internet access available here, so you’ll be out of luck should you wish to check your portfolio or just look at naked people.
All in all the Pull & Pump is a decent, down-to-earth boozer, with a decent range of drink and food at reasonable prices. It does lose of couple of points for the dirty glass, but, so far that’s been a one-off.
