The Evening Star - Surrey Street, Brighton

Do you like beer? No not that generic Euro fizz, I’m talking about real ale! If you do, this is the pub for you.

The Evening Star - Surrey Street, Brighton

The Evening Star is part of the Dark Star brewery. In fact they started brewing beer in the basement of the pub and when demand grew the company had to invest in a dedicated building near Hawards Heath.

Enough of the history - What is this place like? Well it’s always pretty busy, not only due to the great beer, but also because it’s a smallish pub and during peak hours it’s standing room only. There is also a small patio area with some seating at the front of the pub, so smokers aren’t left out in the cold metaphorically speaking.

The staff are friendly and happy to guide you through the choice of beers - as these constantly change, this is a very good thing. If you are the type to plan your visit, (if you’re reading this, I surmise you might be) you can download the tasting notes from the Evening Star website.

The only real criticism is the toilets, I’m not sure, but ever since the smoking ban, the smell of the toilets seem to have been amplified.
