The Hop Poles - Middle Street, Brighton

Situated Halfway down Middle street, the Hop Poles has built up a reputation for providing great food and a great place to drink.

We visited on a Monday evening and the place was packed, this was partially due to pub quiz being held too. The service wasn’t particularly quick, having to wait a good five minutes to get served. The service was friendly and efficient when we did eventually get served.

The food was OK, I think it was a case of having my expectations built up too much. People say this pub does the best food in town, I would say there are a number of pubs which serve comparable dishes; The George on Trafalgar Street for one.

We visited with some ’smoker’ friends, so had to sit out back, which is a pleasant patio area with heaters - it’s quite small and when busy gets very cramped, I got elbowed and knocked by fellow drinkers more than once. This soured my experience somewhat. The annoying thing; upon making my exit the inside was virtually empty, with everyone cramped in the smoking area.

I would recommend this pub, but only if it’s not packed out or you are sitting inside.

Enjoyed looking at your excellent blog!
Thanks for putting the link to the Brighton’s Best Pubs blog.
You might also want to check out our new website: http://www.pubjury.com
On there you can become a pub juror for free, score pubs, submit reviews and upload photos. You can search pubs anywhere in the world, though the best data on there at the moment is for Brighton, the UK as a whole and Australia. Each pub has its own page.
We are developing other functionality continuously and hope to enhance the search functions and add things like pub crawls etc.
