The Open House - Springfield Road, Brighton
After our disappointing visit to The Railway, we decided that we needed sustenance and someone suggested The Open House, which is just over the railway bridge a mere three minute walk away.
And what a difference that three minutes makes! The open house could (by some) be described as ‘arty-farty, middle class’ but I don’t think I’d go that far, in fact I felt a lot more comfortable in here than in The Railway. Inside the surroundings are pleasant with a large bar and a few tables. To the front of the building there is another room with sofas and a few more tables and chairs, the walls being decorated with art. There is also a garden, but being a warm day we had no chance of getting a seat.
The service was friendly and fast considering that the bar was very busy - By this time we’d all worked up quite an appetite, so we also ordered food - This was priced around the £8/meal mark - There were some interesting dishes on offer; wood pigeon pie being one of them!
The staff went out of their way to accommodate some of the more fussy eaters, happily substituting ingredients from one dish to another. You can also see what’s going on in the kitchen and it looked very clean.
I elected for clams with pasta and white wine sauce. The food was served in a timely manner and was delicious! definitely worth the money! I must also compliment the chips, they were the best I’ve had anywhere. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Armadillos!
Everyone else was pleased with the food, drinks and general ambiance - If I had a criticism of the open house it would be that we couldn’t get a seat in the garden, but it was not too hot inside the pub, so I think that’s only a minor point.
